Alexa…….How do we lose Collagen as we age?

The high levels of free radicals that our skin is exposed to on a daily basis can damage the skin as well as result in the destruction of collagen. This can occur from smoking, over-exposure to the sun and pollutants that are present in our environment.

Well….. Thanks Alexa!

Here at Life in the Beauty Lane I take every part of health and well being seriously. Well, except for pizza nights and the sneaking of chicken nuggets from my kids happy meal.  I like to give myself a boost or a helping hand if you will on making sure I look and feel my best from the inside out.  Remember when you mother said you ate such junk you would turn into junk, well we now know she was not far off.  Taking care of your internal self sure as hell shows on our external self.  I would not call myself over obsessive about my looks.  I can always cover up imperfections with makeup but how I feel inside is what truly counts.

I take a daily vitamin to get my  D3  but nothing containing collagen for healthy hair, skin and nails.   I contemplated getting those gummies that are instagram famous but don’t always understand the hype. Especially knowing how your body breaks them down.

I was looking for a good collagen supplement that was versatile as well as effective.   After the age of 20, a person produces about 1 percent less collagen in the skin each year. As a result, the skin becomes thinner and more fragile with age. There is also diminished functioning of the sweat, oil glands and less elastin production.  Over time the lack of collagen in our skin can create fine lines and wrinkles we associate with aging.   Now, I have taken different hair, nail and skin supplements  on and off over the years only to either forget to take them or have lackluster performance when I do.  When I finally committed to finding a product that fit my lifestyle the hunt was on. I knew I did not want capsules, I’d forget to take them.  I did not want gummies, even though tasty, cute and convenient some bodies have a hard time digesting and lose the nutrition in them. This is when I found Vital Proteins, a dietary supplement for Hair, Skin, Nails, Joints and Bones.  Before you read the stats and it sounds like an infomercial just know I purchased my first 20oz Vital Proteins back in November 2017.  I have purchased and been thru 2 (two) 20 oz containers and I am loving it. This natural whole nutrition is an unflavored powder that you can mix in different foods or liquid products.  I enjoy putting it into my homemade pancakes to my daily iced tea or water.  Its not gritty and is absolutely flavorless and odor less. I combine 1 scoop into any baked goods, or 2 scoops with any liquid.  The typical  profile has 18 Amino Acids, is Kosher and Whole 30 Approved.

Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides are sources from grass fed, pasture raised bovine hides.  These peptides are easily digestible in hot or cold liquids.  This product has 20 grams of collagen, paleo friendly, gluten free and dairy free.  It takes me about a month and a half to go thru 1 20 oz container and waited till now to write a review.

My collagen mixed into my green tea.  Taken November 16, 2017

This is my second 20oz container, I’m ready to place another order 🙂

I started seeing and feeling the effects of this collagen, taking once a day within approx. 2 weeks.  I notice if anything is working within my face first.  Being a makeup artist and daily applier to my own skin I noticed a difference in my cheeks.  I also noticed my skin thicker if you will, just a little plumper and not the plumpness you get from a night of Chinese food.  It also came with a healthy glow and diminished some acne scars for a smoother appearance.  The trick is with any supplement to take it on the regular and as busy as my mom schedule is, I was able to sneak this in with my water, smoothie, green tea, coffee without compromising taste.  I also noticed with continued use a boost of clean energy, nothing too noticeable, just that I did not have any sugar spikes or lag as I get with a Venti Starbucks Flat White.

Speaking of Coffee…………..

It was not till later in life I finally realized that I was mildly lactose intolerant.  The devil horns come out if I’m too heavy handed with the creamer.  So my half and half was killing me softly and you can forget about that pint of Cherry Garcia.  This was really the first time in my life I had to shift my dietary needs to live life fuller.  Since I enjoyed my Vital Proteins for my water,  I wanted to try their creamer for my morning cup of joe.

What I purchased this week! February 16th 2018!

I love trying new products from companies that I already have a ride or die affinity for. I also love finding products that help solve a solution I have a problem for. It was just recently I started adding a coconut milk or Almond milk to my java.  Ive luckily always taken my coffee without sugar so I had that to my advantage but was missing the creamy-ness of the half and half and the way it took away the bite of the bold brew.

This sandy creamer was a diamond in the rough.  Don’t be put off by its texture.  With 10 grams of protein it is a perfect pair for my coffee.  Being nutrient dense I did not expect to taste as good as it did.  With no added sugars or sweeteners you still taste the vanilla thru and thru.

Being dairy and lactose free it fit in with my lifestyle perfectly.  Literally ingredients that you can read it includes: Organic coconut milk powder, collagen peptides, vanilla bean powder, organic bamboo shoot extract and organic acacia fiber.  That’s it folks.  Its is also whole 30 approved and has a lengthily amino acid profile.  It dissolves completely and although will never be as creamy/dreamy as my half and half the smooth vanilla flavor profile meets me in the middle.
